Ingredients
For the patties:
- 12 oz canned salmon, well squeezed and drained or 12 oz cooked salmon, flaked (leftovers work great!)
- 2 tablespoons red bell pepper, finely minced
- 2 slices American cheese, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 egg whites
- ⅔ cup panko
- 2 tablespoons avocado oil (for the pan)
For the smashburger sauce:
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
To assemble:
- 4 slices American cheese
- 4 sesame hamburger buns
- 8 slices ripe tomato
- 4 leaves crisp lettuce (romaine or iceberg)
Preparation
-
Step 1 Make the patties
In a medium bowl, combine the salmon, red bell pepper, chopped cheese, soy sauce, garlic powder, salt, egg whites, and panko. Mix until well combined. Divide into 4 portions and shape into thin, even patties.
Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat and coat with avocado oil. Carefully place the patties in the pan. Cook 2–3 minutes per side, until crispy and browned. During the last 90 seconds, add a slice of cheese to each patty so it melts.
-
Step 2 Make the sauce
In a small bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, ketchup, and relish. Set aside.
-
Step 3 Assemble the burgers
Place each patty on a bottom bun. Top with 2 tomato slices, 1 lettuce leaf, and a generous spoonful of smashburger sauce. Add the top bun and serve immediately.
