Juneau, Alaska. January 31, 2008 - The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) announces the release of several new materials that explain the State of Alaska’s long-held dedication to sustainability. These materials will be showcased at ASMI’s new Sustainability Center at the upcoming International Boston Seafood Show (February 24th – 26th, Booth #433) and will help demonstrate why sustainability is much more than a catchphrase – for Alaska, it’s a tradition. ASMI staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on Alaska’s fisheries management practices.
Consumer concern for the ocean ecosystem is growing, and with it preference for sustainable seafood. These new materials, including a Sustainability Brochure and Standards Comparison Fact Sheet will allow retailers to provide accurate and detailed information to help consumers make better-informed seafood purchases. They will also help retailers demonstrate their commitment to corporate responsibility.
The elegant design and vivid scenic imagery of the Sustainability Brochure and Standards Comparison Fact Sheet illustrate Alaska’s pristine fishing environment, while detailed technical information and a standards comparison chart describe why Alaska’s precautionary, science-based management practices are a model for the world.
The materials detail the state of Alaska’s fisheries management structure, providing insight on resource management, stock assessments, quota regulations, bycatch reduction and habitat protection efforts. Additionally, the materials explain how Alaska is dedicated to transparent and public decision-making, collaboration, and respect for the Alaskan fishing families and communities whose livelihood and culture depend on this natural resource. To order these materials, visit ASMI online at www.alaskaseafood.org or call (800) 806-2497.
Since acceptance into the Union in 1959, Alaska’s Constitution has mandated that “Fish…be utilized, developed and maintained on the sustained yield principle.” This long-term dedication to sustainability has resulted in keeping the world stocked with a continuous, ever-replenishing supply of wild seafood. Alaska's effective and precise fisheries management practices are considered a model for the world.
The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute is the State of Alaska’s official seafood marketing arm. It is a public agency of the State of Alaska, funded by the Alaska seafood industry with support from state and federal funds. ASMI promotes Alaska seafood throughout the U.S. and in 16 other countries. ASMI also provides education and training to the seafood industry in food safety and quality assurance practices.
