American Heart Association Formally Endorses Omega-3s for
Coronary Artery Disease Patients
According to Mayo Clinic proceedings, the American Heart Association's (AHA)
recommendation for people with coronary artery disease (CAD) calls for approximately 1 gram
per day of an omega-3 mixture of docosahexaenolic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid
(EPA). The AHA statement identifies oily fish, such as salmon, as the ideal source. This
recommendation is based on thorough evidence supporting the cardiovascular and triglyceride lowering
effects of omega-3s. Both DHA and EPA are present in all oily fish, but at different
ratios. Salmon, for example, contains DHA and EPA in an approximate ratio of 2:1. For people
without coronary artery disease, the daily recommended amount of DHA and EPA is at least 250
to 500 milligrams.
