Industry Innovations: Wild Alaska salmon is a nutritious new ingredient in baby food
Recent research has shown that omega-3s are critical for a baby's eye and brain development. According to a recent study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, during the last few months of pregnancy, omega-3s boost an infant's sensory, cognitive, and motor development. When the nervous system is developing, a fetus needs large amounts of DHA (a type of omega-3 fatty acid found in fish, which is especially high in salmon).

Now, wild Alaska salmon has made its debut into a brand new market - as a key ingredient in an innovative new baby food. Beech-Nut Nutrition Corp. has recently launched a new line of nutritional baby foods. One of these new products contains wild Alaska pink salmon (known for its delicate flavor and tender texture) combined with sweet potatoes. This unique formula is designed to promote healthy digestion, enhance mental and visual development, improve concentration and encourage growth.

According to the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation, who was involved in the research and development of this product, there is great potential for this new baby food in the U.S. and beyond. If this salmon line does well in the market, new products containing pollock or other fish products may follow.

Priced reasonably, and with high nutritional value, time-pressed consumers will find this to be a good option for providing essential dietary benefits for their growing babies. And with the abundance of wild and sustainable Alaska salmon, consumers can rest assured that there will be plenty for babies, children, and adults alike - for generations to come.
