Natural Health
The May 2006 issue of Natural Health magazine offers news about balancing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for optimal health. The article, "Healthy Appetites, Savvy Strategies for Eating Well," highlights wild salmon as a matchless source of hard to find omega-3s.
Author Christina Pirello, M.F.S.N., explains that omega-3s and omega-6s are essential fatty acids; they are not manufactured internally and must be obtained from foods. An ideal diet, according to Pirello, consists of four, or fewer, parts omega-6s to one omega-3. Regrettably, Pirello reports, "Most Americans get at least ten times more omega-6s than omega-3s. This throws off the balance necessary for good health." Omega-6s, according to Pirello, are very common in the western diet, however, "Getting enough omega-3s can be elusive. Cold-water fish, especially mackerel and wild salmon, are the richest sources."
Natural Health is a monthly publication with a circulation of 350,000 that offers readers advice on how to "look good, feel good," and "do good."
Every Woman
Every Woman magazine refers to wild salmon as "Brain Food" in an article titled "Brain Builders, It's Never Too Late - or Too Early - To Learn New Tricks" featured in the Every Woman spring issue. In the article, "Brain Builders" author Roberta B. Abrams, RNC, MA, relates new cognitive health research that suggests readers try "stimulation and relaxation," to help maintain proper brain fitness, and that readers take a bite of some "brain food."
According to Abrams, "getting appropriate nutrition is key [to] cognitive health" and Abrams describes appropriate nutrition as an "anti-inflammatory diet rich in healthy fats, like omega-3 acids and antioxidants." Abrams then includes a couple of the cornerstones to an anti-inflammatory diet: "fresh ground flax seed, walnuts and oily cold-water fish such as wild (not farm raised) salmon are the best sources of omega-3s."
Every Woman is a comprehensive, evidence-based, education resource for women, with a readership of over 6 million. The magazine is written entirely by leading nurse experts.
