Tips and Recipes for Grilling Season
With the warm weather of spring and summer comes the onset of a culinary phenomenon: grilling season! Outdoor grilling allows people to enjoy delicious food and great weather at the same time, and the fun of grilling takes preparing meals from a chore to a sport. The firm texture and rich flavor of Alaska Seafood lends itself well to not only grilling, but also to the traditional Northwest method of plank grilling. "Planking," broiling or grilling fish on a wooden plank, leaves a hint of the wood's aromatic flavors lingering in the dish and creates a beautiful food presentation.
The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) offers a wide range of outstanding grilling and planking recipes and tips on its website. The planked salmon recipe, Terrific Taj Rub, is an exotic, gourmet treat while Alaska Salmon Salad Monterey is a favorite for summer. Great Smoky Grilled Alaska Crab and this month's recipe of the month, Alaska Halibut with Tangy Fruit Salsa, add excitement and flavor to any summer get-together.
In addition to the plethora of grilling and planking recipes on the website, ASMI also provides advice about grilling Alaska Seafood through a series of three-minute videos featuring commercial fisherwoman Erika Courier. The "Quick Tricks" videos offer grilling techniques for different species, as well as, advice on seasonings, temperature and how to tell when seafood is done.

Now Available: Four New Health-Focused Bilingual Brochures
by Dr. Joyce Nettleton
Nutrition scientist Dr. Joyce Nettleton has written four new bilingual brochures (Spanish and English) for the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI). These brochures address consumer concerns and questions about seafood as well as promote Alaska Seafood as a healthy choice.
Heart Health Benefits From Eating Fish details 12 ways in which eating seafood can promote good cardiovascular health. Nettleton explains why the American Heart Association now urges citizens to consume fatty species of fish at least twice a week. "The oils in fish are unique," writes Nettleton. "They have omega-3s, fatty acids not found in any other foods. The omega-3s in fish improve the way the heart works and make other conditions that contribute to heart disease less dangerous."
In Seafood Safety, Dr. Nettleton explains how to safely handle seafood. She also confirms that Alaska Seafood is not at risk for environmental contaminants. "Fortunately, Alaska Salmon, Cod and Pollock have among the lowest mercury levels of all seafoods."
Nettleton explains the importance of seafood to pregnant and nursing mothers in Healthy Mothers-Healthy Babies. "Some nutrients must be available at specific times for the developing baby," writes Nettleton, and one of these nutrients, the omega-3 fatty acid DHA, is critical to a baby's brain development and "occurs exclusively in fish."
Staying Healthy by Eating Seafood Often features seafood's positive effects on visual function, preventing type 2 diabetes, reducing inflammatory conditions, and the improvements that eating seafood can have on mental function. Nettleton explains "Eating seafood discourages the development of chronic health conditions that impair health as we age."
Dr. Nettleton's bilingual brochures convey universally-important messages about health and health issues that cannot be ignored and stand to aid readers to better health. To order the bilingual brochures contact ASMI at 1-800-806-2497.
