ASMI Retail Exhibits at the World Ethnic Market Trade Show in Anaheim, CA
With the Hispanic population in mind, ASMI will exhibit at the World Ethnic Market trade show, which incorporates the kosher, halal and ethnic food shows under one roof. The show, scheduled March 23-24 at the Anaheim, California Convention Center, will be co-located with New Hope Natural Media's Natural Products Expo West. ASMI's booth number is 5301.
Given the growing Hispanic population (it is estimated Hispanics will make up 15 percent of the U.S. population by the year 2020) and their familiarity with fish and shellfish, the World Ethnic Market trade show is the perfect venue to expose Alaska Seafood to a wide range of specialty food buyers.
Alaska Seafood is a natural fit for the Hispanic diet. A New York Sea Grant-sponsored study, where Cornell researchers looked at "some of the beliefs and preferences about fish and shellfish that exist within the Hispanic population of metropolitan New York," found, "two-thirds of the survey respondents reported that seafood was part of their country's or family's traditional diet." Additionally, "ninety-two percent of the respondents consider fish good for their family's health, and between 91 and 94 percent agreed that fish is nutritious and a good source of protein."
The study also noted that "home" is the most common place for Hispanics to consume seafood (as opposed to restaurants).
Additional survey findings of interest:
"Hispanic consumers said that the amount of in-store demonstrations, recipes and samples offered
in fish stores was less satisfactory."
"Hispanic consumers frequently reported that they were positively influenced by the taste of
seafood products."
"Forty-eight percent of those surveyed also noted that species names were not given in Spanish
often enough."
Contact the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute at 1-800-806-2497 for Hispanic marketing materials and for a list of Alaska Seafood species names in Spanish.
