"Heart-healthy foods keep your ticker in top shape," notes a recent article posted on CNN.com. Foods that are high in omega-3s, such as cold-water fish like salmon and pollock, are especially good for your heart - helping to make arteries more supple and easing down blood pressure. The article notes that omega-3s are "amazing multi-taskers," by simultaneously working against several heart disease factors including reducing arterial inflammation, preventing abnormal heart rhythms, and changing the quality of LDL cholesterol molecules so that they don't build up in the vessels. The article also notes that the American Heart Association recommends eating fresh fish at least twice a week, and that a six-ounce serving of salmon provides a gram or more of omega-3s.

An article in the August issue of Cooking Light magazine delves into the world of alternative fats, explaining the benefits of the polyunsaturated fats group that includes omega-3 fatty acids. The article explains that omega-3s are found in fatty fish, such as salmon, and plants such as flaxseed and walnuts. Omega-3s contain two components with different benefits: EPA and DHA. EPA is useful for alleviating arterial inflammation and preventing blood platelets from clumping, while DHA is valuable to the retina and brain. The article notes: "Plant sources of omega-3s confer heart-health benefits similar to those of other foods rich in polyunsaturated fats, but because the chemical structure of the omega-3 fatty acid they contain (alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA) is different, the body does not convert it as readily to EPA or DHA." Additionally, the article points to two recent studies from the University of Pittsburgh that suggest omega-3s found in fish may help improve mood and increase gray matter in the brain.
