Message from the Executive Director

Hello, all.

The International Boston Seafood Show was full of opportunities for players in our industry to meet one another. A session held during the conference focused on expanding the market for salmon; it provided Alaska with the opportunity to educate the audience about sustainable management of Alaska seafood resources, particularly salmon, and it was a pleasure for me to deliver that message to this exceptional audience. The popularity of seafood from Alaska was clearly driving lots of buyers to the booths of ASMI and Alaska producers at the show, and an enthusiastic crowd gathered for 'Go Wild Alaska Style ,' a reception hosted by the State of Alaska, private processors and retailers, adjacent to the event.

We continue to work closely with the Alaska State Legislature to fund ASMI's increment in the Governor's budget. Our Senate mark is very good and I am encouraged by the support for state funding we have received from industry members across the state.

Be sure to check out the Seafood Market Bulletin March supplement on canned salmon (see link below). This supplement highlights changes in product form and marketing success that have improved the position of Alaska Salmon in the marketplace. This is a positive change from 2002 and reflects the combined efforts of the entire industry, the State of Alaska and ASMI to turn this market around.

Our consumer advertising campaigns and promotional partnerships with retailers, foodservice distributors, and restaurant operators are aimed at keeping demand high. Our industry is working to become stronger, with companies making positive moves to increase their edge in the fiercely competitive global marketplace for seafood. Many fishermen are at Alaska's harbors getting their vessels prepared for upcoming commercial openings. The herring are spawning, and the king salmon are right behind them: this is proof positive that Spring has arrived, never mind the lingering snow.

Sincerely,

Ray Riutta
