Message from the Executive Director

Hello again,

Many of the ASMI domestic marketing staff are preparing for the Boston Seafood Show and for Comfish in Kodiak. In Juneau we are working to shepherd our budget through a Legislature that is focused on cutting the level of government spending, so the sledding is a bit rough right now. The International staff recently submitted our Unified Export Strategy to the US Department of Agriculture requesting funding for our overseas program next year.

At our meeting several weeks ago, the ASMI Board, with the help of the various ASMI committee chairs, set the parameters for next year's marketing activities. These are ambitious and depend heavily on the outcome of our budget negotations with the state and the feds. Our plans for the domestic market include a cable TV component to build upon our last several years' Consumer Advertising program. With the step up to cable we will increase the reach to our target audience five fold. In the international markets we are requesting a sizeable increase to enable ASMI to step up its activity in Europe and China, and begin to develop an emerging markets strategy for Eastern Europe (Russia, Poland, Czech Republic). We have made good progress in our marketing and alignment efforts over the last few years and next fiscal year's budget (starts July 1) is intended to build on that momentum.

Late last week I had the pleasure to address the board of United Fishermen of Alaska and update them on ASMI's budget situation. I am pleased to report that UFA has joined with our processing sector to strongly support the Governor's requested state funding for ASMI. After a few turbulent years it seems that the entire industry is coming together to support our marketing efforts and we, the ASMI staff, are very pleased with the support we are receiving from our industry. We are committed to delivering to you the best marketing programs possible. As long as our budget holds up through the legislative process we should be able to keep the momentum going in the year ahead.

Come see us at Boston and/or Comfish. We will be at booth #528 in Boston and at #410 in Kodiak.

I will update you later in the month when we get back from Boston and Kodiak.

Ray
