Message from the Executive Director

Greetings! The Alaska State Legislature convened last week, and Governor Murkowski has outlined his plans for public policy and spending. His two addresses to the Legislature last week have affirmed Alaska’s commitment to wise stewardship of the state's marine resources, and continued strong support for Alaska's seafood industry. We look forward to similar strong support from the Legislature for the Governor’s $2.3 million general fund commitment to match our industry dollars. These funds will enable us to continue our marketing activities that have been so successful these past two years and expand our reach in several important emerging markets.

Sincerely,

Ray Riutta

Governor Affirms Commitment to Sustainable Fisheries
Governor Frank Murkowski addressed the members of the Alaska State Legislature as they met in joint session January 12 to hear his "State of the Budget" address. Here is an excerpt from that speech, in which the Governor outlined plans to further strengthen the state’s fisheries management program:

"Our sustainable management approach - recognized as the best fisheries management regime in the world, is more visible than ever. For only the third time since commercial salmon fishing began in Alaska 127 years ago, Alaska's commercial fishermen harvested over 200 million salmon in 2005."

"While salmon is an important component of our fishing industry, it is also important that the state of Alaska continue to work closely with the halibut, cod, pollock, shellfish, and crab fishing industry as well."

"My FY07 budget proposes to invest state funds in salmon stock assessment projects around the state. This will enable the department to improve and monitor the scientific basis of established escapement goals."

French Celebrate Holidays with Array of Alaska Smoked Salmon
More Alaska smoked salmon products than ever before were offered to French consumers this holiday season, and a total of nine brands were available in the market. In addition to king and coho a variety of sockeye was offered; it is finally taking off this year: it took awhile for customers to accept that its bright red color was Mother Nature's own choice. The French smokers did a great job of drawing attention to the products with inserts in distributors' catalogs, tasting demonstrations, displays in the stores, and unique packaging emphasizing the wild Alaska origin. They also offered a choice of sizes from the small 2-slice pack to family pack, and department stores and supermarkets carried a choice of at least two or three brands.
