Program Background & History
At the top of the world, amidst breathtaking scenery and exceptional wildlife, Alaska fishermen harvest their catch from pure, bountiful seas. As nets and pots are unloaded, wild Alaska seafood is flown and shipped across the globe. The unique flavor, health benefits, and sustainability of the Alaska fisheries have made Alaska salmon, whitefish and shellfish internationally coveted commodities.
Since 1987, ASMI has participated in federal export assistance programs. ASMI currently participates in the Market Access Program (MAP) which is administered by United States Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service. ASMI, the State of Alaska and the federal government work together to create promotions that increase volume, value and/or market share for Alaska seafood.
The International Program strives to accomplish two goals:
- Maintain market share in the face of dramatically increased competition in ASMI’s mature markets: Northern Europe, Western Europe, Southern Europe and Japan.
- Expand and establish Alaska Seafood in the world’s most promising emerging markets: China, Central Europe and Eastern Europe.
ASMI also participates in the Alaska Canned Salmon Global Food Aid Program. In the past three years 4,000 metric tons of canned Alaska salmon have reached the hungry. Click here to read more.
The International Program is headquartered in ASMI’s Juneau, Alaska office.
