FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Alaska King Salmon Season Opens on October 11, 2000 JUNEAU, AK (October 6, 2000) - On October 11, 2000 the Southeast Alaska Winter Troll Fishery will reopen and run through April 14, 2001 or until 45,000 King Salmon have been landed. King Salmon are also commonly referred to by their Native Alaskan name - Chinook Salmon. King Salmon are the largest yet least abundant of the salmon species. They are a high-value fish that are available fresh and frozen throughout the year. They are generally marketed in whole steak, smoked and fillet forms. The winter season for King Salmon has a very active start in October, continuing into early November, with another flurry of activity in late March into early April. Using a slower catch method, the hook-and-line catch, the fishermen are able to give King Salmon the immediate and careful attention they need to ensure freshness and maintain the highest quality. With an average weight of 20 pounds, King Salmon are known for their red flesh, rich flavor, high oil content and firm texture.
