“Sustainability: More Than A Catchphrase, For Alaska It’s A Tradition”
The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute Announces New Materials Detailing the State’s Leadership in Sustainable Fisheries Management For Foodservice Professionals

Seattle, Washington. January 23, 2008 – The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) announces the release of several new materials that help illustrate the State of Alaska’s long-held dedication to sustainability—aiding chefs to better understand how Alaska’s sustainable seafood translates from sea to plate.

The Sustainability Fact Sheet, Brochure, and Standards Comparison Fact Sheet provide detailed technical information and a standards comparison chart describing why Alaska’s precautionary, science-based management practices stand out from the rest of the world.

For Alaska, “sustainability” is much more than a catchphrase—it’s a tradition. These new materials offer chefs and foodservice professionals the information needed to fully understand the state of Alaska’s sustainability platform including management structure, philosophy on resource management, stock assessments, quota regulations, bycatch reduction and habitat protection efforts. ASMI’s continued dedication to helping educate foodservice professionals continues with these new materials, and as always they are available free of charge. For more information and to order please visit www.alaskaseafood.org or call (800) 806-2497.

Since acceptance into the Union in 1959, Alaska’s Constitution has mandated that “Fish…be utilized, developed and maintained on the sustained yield principle.” This long-term dedication to sustainability has resulted in keeping the world stocked with a continuous, ever-replenishing supply of wild seafood. Alaska's effective and precise fisheries management practices are considered a model for the world.

The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute is the State of Alaska’s official seafood marketing arm.  It is a public agency of the State of Alaska, funded by the Alaska seafood industry with support from state and federal funds. ASMI promotes Alaska seafood throughout the U.S. and in 16 other countries. ASMI also provides education and training to the seafood industry in food safety and quality assurance practices.
