How are Alaska’s fisheries being managed in a precautionary, sustainable fashion?
The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) recently released a new fact sheet answering this question – detailing the state’s dedication to sustainability and how this has led to Alaska being recognized as a model for the world for its sustainable fisheries management.

As noted in the fact sheet, many of the world’s fish populations are in danger from sources of overfishing, habitat damage, or pollution. The State of Alaska, however, understands that the health of our oceans and the quality of the seafood we serve depends on sustainable fishing practices. Alaska seafood comes from fisheries that can exist long-term without compromising the survival of the species or the health of the surrounding ecosystem. This requires a careful system of strict harvesting regulations, precautionary management, and constant monitoring of fish stocks and quotas.

Since acceptance into the Union in 1959, Alaska’s constitution has mandated that "Fish…be utilized, developed and maintained on the sustained yield principle." This long-term dedication to sustainability has resulted in keeping the world stocked with a continuous, ever-replenishing supply of wild seafood. Due to this commitment and precautionary approach to fisheries management, Alaska leads the pack as the world’s gold standard for premium wild and sustainable seafood.
