New Sustainability Materials -
a ready resource to answer all of your questions.
The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) announces the release of several new materials that demonstrate the State of Alaska’s long-held dedication to sustainability. For Alaska, "sustainability" is much more than a catchphrase - it’s a tradition.

Currently, this sustainability series contains a Fact Sheet, Brochure, and Standards Comparison Sheet. Detailed technical information describe why Alaska’s precautionary, science-based management practices stand out from the rest of the systems in use around the world. In particular, the sustainability materials offer an overview of the State of Alaska’s sustainability platform and management structure and provide insight into the philosophy on resource management, stock assessments and quota regulations, bycatch reduction and habitat protection efforts. Additionally, these materials explain why Alaska is dedicated to transparent and public decision-making, collaboration, and respect for the Alaskan fishing families and communities whose livelihood and culture depend on this natural resource.

As noted in this series of educational materials, many of the world’s fish populations are in danger from overfishing, habitat damage, or pollution. The State of Alaska, however, understands that the health of our oceans and the quality of the seafood they serve depends on sustainable fishing practices. Alaska seafood comes from fisheries that can exist long-term without compromising the survival of the species or the health of the surrounding ecosystem. This requires a careful system of strict harvesting regulations, precautionary management, and constant monitoring of fish stocks and quotas.

Since acceptance into the Union in 1959, Alaska’s constitution has mandated that "Fish…be utilized, developed and maintained on the sustained yield principle." This long-term dedication to sustainability has resulted in keeping the world stocked with a continuous, ever-replenishing supply of wild seafood. Alaska has been recognized as a model for the world for its sustainable fisheries management.
