November 2007 Seafood Market Bulletin

Alaska Department of Revenue released the May-August 2007 Alaska Salmon Price Report (ASPR) October 15, shortly before publication of the OctoberSeafood Market Bulletin.


Rather than delay the October bulletin to include the ASPR salmon data, we published the October bulletin and wrote up the ASPR salmon analysis as a bulletin supplement.


Alaska Salmon Price Report, May-August 2007

The Alaska Salmon Price Report (ASPR) covers wholesale volume and first wholesale value, by species and area, for six key Alaska salmon products. It is the primary data source for most of the salmon market analysis published by the Seafood Market Information Service. The report as published by Department of Revenue is specific to area but is summarized into statewide totals here. READ MORE


Canned Salmon Sales and Price

For ease of discussion, all can sizes are converted to a single measure: 48-tall case equivalent. The 48-tall case equivalent captures production and sales volume of all four standard can sizes for canned pink and canned sockeye. READ MORE


Preliminary Canned Salmon Production and Inventory Estimates

Pack estimates in this issue of the bulletin are preliminary, as statewide harvest figures are not yet finalized. Pack estimates (and resulting inventory figures) are replaced with actual production figures published in the Annual Alaska Salmon Production Report, typically released by Alaska Department of Revenue in early March. Frozen Sockeye Market

First wholesale value of the Alaska salmon industry was over $855 million in 2006. Frozen H&G sockeye was the most valuable single-species salmon product produced in Alaska, with first wholesale value of $153 million in 2006. Considering the strong sockeye harvest of 2007 and the 31-million-fish sockeye harvest projection for Bristol Bay in 2008, frozen sockeye will likely retain its title as the single most valuable Alaska salmon product.
