Alaska Department of Revenue released the September-December 2006 Alaska Salmon Price Report (ASPR) in late February. Due to the low sales volume of fresh fillet and fresh H&G salmon during the period, those products are not included in the summary table and discussion. READ MORE


Frozen Sockeye Pace of Sales

The ASPR report for September-December 2006 and the annual production report for calendar year 2006 provide two data points to update an important development in the frozen sockeye market. The new data provides actual 2006 production of frozen H&G sockeye (80.6 million pounds, close to our estimate of 80-85 million pounds) and provides sales volume through December, which enables us to quantify pace of sales compared to previous years. January 2007 Canned Salmon Inventories

Alaska Department of Revenue released the September-December 2006 Alaska Salmon Price Report (ASPR) in late February, completing the data series for the calendar year. The Department released its 2006 Alaska Salmon Production Report in mid-March. Canned salmon production figures from the report replace our post-season canned salmon production estimates with actual production figures, the final piece needed to update canned salmon inventories to January 2007. Canned Salmon Sales Volume and Price

Average first wholesale prices for canned salmon in the September – December 2006 period were up sharply for canned pink salmon and were mixed for canned sockeye. READ MORE

Alaska Production

Alaska’s whitefish production is well underway for the 2007 season with winter Pacific cod fisheries wrapping up around the state and pollock fisheries progressing in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska regions. READ MORE


Crab Update

Bering Sea Snow Crab

With strong Pacific cod prices keeping some fishermen on the cod grounds in early January, the 2007 Bering Sea snow crab harvest got off to a slow start. Only 5.2 million pounds had been landed on January 30th. January 2007 landings were down 35 percent from January 2006. Along with a strong Pacific cod market, issues with processing capacity due to a fire aboard a floating processor on its way to the Pribilof Islands also played a role in the slow early season harvest.
