Canned Salmon Sales Volume and Price

Average first wholesale prices for canned salmon in the September – December 2006 period were up sharply for canned pink salmon and were mixed for canned sockeye.

Average price for 48-tall canned pink in Sep-Dec 2006 was $53.82, up more than $12 per case from Sep-Dec 2005 and nearly $20 per case from the low point of $34 in late 2003. Sales volume of canned pink in September – December 2006 totaled 1,082,000 48-tall case equivalent, down from the previous three years’ average of 1.4 million for the September – December period.

Average case price for 48-half canned sockeye fell to $59.06 in Sep-Dec 2006, down from $62.17 during the same period in 2005. Average case price for 48-tall canned sockeye in Sep-Dec 2006 was $94.63, up about $1 per case from the same period in 2005. However, since about two-thirds (63 percent) of canned sockeye is sold in half-pound cans, the overall price trend for canned sockeye is down.
