As of January 1, 2006 canned salmon inventories stand at 847,000 48-tall case equivalent for canned sockeye and 2.7 million 48-tall case equivalent for canned pink salmon.
Canned sockeye inventory is slightly (8 percent) above the five year average of 786,000 cases, though the five-year average is distorted upward by the unusually high inventories of 2000 and 2001.
The January 2006 canned pink salmon inventory of 2.77 million cases is significantly higher than January 2005 inventory of 2.11 million cases but is slightly below the five-year average. This is remarkable in light of the record pink harvest in 2005 (146 million fish) and points to the ongoing product-form shift from canned to frozen pink production.
