This supplement to the ASMI Seafood Market Bulletin is intended to provide additional and more timely information to program users, specifically on canned salmon. The full March issue of the Seafood Market Bulletin will follow this supplement.
Alaska Departm
ent of Revenue released the September-December 2005 Alaska Salmon Price Report (ASPR) in late February. The ASPR contains first wholesale prices for six Alaska salmon products, including canned salmon. The September���December ASPR completes the data series for the calendar year.
Alaska Department of Revenue released its (amended) 2005 Alaska Salmon Production Report March 16. The production report provides the final piece of data to replace our post-season canned salmon production estimates with actual production and updated canned salmon inventories to January 2006.
Compared to the figures published in the amended ASPR production report, our 2005 canned salmon production estimates were accurate to within 8 percent for pink salmon and accurate to within 0.2 percent for canned sockeye.
As of January 1, 2006 canned salmon inventories stand at 847,000 48-tall case equivalent for canned sockeye and 2.7 million 48-tall case equivalent for canned pink salmon. READ MORE
Average first wholesale prices for canned salmon in the September ��� December 2005 period showed improvement over the same period in 2004. READ MORE
The ASPR canned pink production figures for 2005 suggest that canned product as a percentage of the total Alaska pink salmon pack is likely in the 54 ��� 56 percent range, down from 63 - 64 percent in 2003 and 2004 and significantly below the average of 75 percent between 1992 and 2002. READ MORE
