Two years ago Russian fishermen caught over 420,000 metric tons (MT) of pinks - triple the Alaska harvest. For context, Alaska's average harvest of pink salmon was 175,100 MT from 2005 to 2009. Russian fishermen are expecting another large pink harvest for 2011. Through mid-August, Russian fishermen harvested 401,200 MT of all salmon (mostly pink and Keta), compared to the mid-season harvest of roughly 200,000 MT of pink and Keta in Alaska (through 8/19). Russia's salmon harvest is 26,000 MT ahead of the record 2009-season pace, and given recent statements from the Russian Federal Fisheries Agency (FFA), pink salmon harvests should be similar to 2009 levels. The Russian FFA predicts total salmon harvests to reach 555,000 MT. It should be noted there is still a lot of fishing to be done, both in Alaska and in Russia.
The Seafood Market Information Service is funded by a portion of the seafood marketing tax paid by Alaska seafood processors. McDowell Group provides the service as a contractor to Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI).
The Seafood Market Bulletin is currently published four times a year and is available online to permit holders, processors, and other industry participants free of charge. Sign up to receive email notification of the publication of new Seafood Market Bulletins.
