The Southeast Alaska winter troll fishery for king salmon will remain open until April 30, or until the quota of 45,000 fish has been caught. Through April 14, harvest was 37,000 fish. Catch rates in mid and late April are typically strong and the remaining quota (8,000 fish) will likely be caught before the scheduled closing date for the season.  READ MORE


Ex-vessel value of Alaska Chinook salmon is expected to rise this season, due to a substantial decrease in the market supply of wild Chinook. Alaska harvest is expected to be relatively high (projected at 780,000 fish) but management actions in the West-coast salmon fishery (Washington, Oregon, California) are expected to reduce the total North America harvest from the four-year average of nearly 2 million fish to about 1.4 million.

Alaska Department of Revenue released the September-December 2005 Alaska Salmon Price Report (ASPR) in late February. Due to the low sales volume of fresh fillet and fresh H&G salmon during the period, those products are not included in the summary table. READ MORE

The Sep-Dec ASPR completes the data series for the calendar year, providing a broader perspective on sales volume and first wholesale values, particularly for frozen products. READ MORE


Alaska Department of Revenue released its (amended) 2005 Annual Alaska Salmon Production Report in mid-March. The annual report data is within the parameters of the Alaska Salmon Price Report (ASPR). The reporting threshold is one million pounds and the data includes only the six product-forms specified in the ASPR. READ MORE

As of April 8, the National Marine Fisheries Service reported that 70,066 metric tons (154 million pounds) of Pacific cod had been harvested in federal waters commercial fisheries in the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands (BSAI) and the Gulf of Alaska. This was about one-quarter of the total allowable catch (TAC) in each region. READ MORE



As of April 17, six weeks into the IFQ season, statewide halibut landings total 7.8 million pounds (15 percent of allocation) and sablefish landings total 4.6 million pounds (13 percent of allocation). At this point in the season most landings are from Eastern Gulf areas. READ MORE


Most Alaska seafood industry value comes from a few large-scale fisheries like pollock, salmon, halibut and cod. Though these fisheries are the logical focus of the Seafood Market Information Service, the electronic format of the market bulletin gives us plenty of room to address smaller scale fisheries of interest.
