“Sustainability: More Than A Catchphrase, For Alaska It’s A Tradition”
Visit ASMI’s New Sustainability Center at the 2008 International Boston Seafood Show

Juneau, Alaska. February 1, 2008 – The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) announces a new Sustainability Resource Center at their booth at the upcoming International Boston Seafood Show (February 24th – 26th).  ASMI staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on the State of Alaska’s long-held dedication to sustainability and how this has led to Alaska being recognized as a model for the world for its sustainable fisheries management.

For Alaska, “sustainability” is much more than a catchphrase – it’s a tradition.  To help demonstrate this, the Sustainability Center will be stocked with a variety of new sustainability materials. The materials detail the state of Alaska’s fisheries management structure, providing insight on resource management, stock assessments, quota regulations, bycatch reduction and habitat protection efforts.

The elegant design and vivid scenic imagery of the Sustainability Fact Sheet, Brochure, and Standards Comparison Chart offer detailed technical information and a standards comparison chart describing why Alaska’s precautionary, science-based management practices are a model for the world. Additionally, these materials explain how Alaska is dedicated to transparent and public decision-making, collaboration, and respect for the Alaskan fishing families and communities whose livelihood and culture depend on this natural resource.

Visitors who stop by ASMI’s Sustainability Center (located at Booth #433) will learn that all Alaska seafood comes from fisheries that can exist long-term without compromising the survival of the species or the health of the surrounding ecosystem.  This requires a careful system of strict harvesting regulations, precautionary management, and constant scientific monitoring of fish stocks and quotas.

Working press members are invited to attend the trade show and conference at no charge. To receive a complimentary Press Registration, simply visit www.bostonseafood.com.

Alaska is the pioneer of sustainability. Since acceptance into the Union in 1959, Alaska’s Constitution has mandated that “fish…be utilized, developed and maintained on the sustained yield principle.” This long-term dedication to sustainability has resulted in keeping the world stocked with a continuous, ever- replenishing supply of wild seafood. Alaska's effective and precise fisheries management practices are considered a model for the world.

The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute is the State of Alaska’s official seafood marketing arm.  It is a public agency of the State of Alaska, funded by the Alaska seafood industry and state and federal funds. ASMI promotes Alaska seafood throughout the U.S. and in 16 other countries. ASMI also provides education and training to the seafood industry in food safety and quality assurance practices.  Please go to www.alaskaseafood.org for more information.
