“Prime-Time For Wild Alaska Crab”

Juneau, Alaska, September 20, 2007 - The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) announces that the much-anticipated Alaska king and snow crab season will open on October 15th, 2007. Alaska Dungeness crab also continues to be available throughout the fall. Alaska’s fall crab lineup is predicted to receive high ratings from consumers, retailers and chefs alike.

As the weather turns cold and the snow begins to fall, Alaska’s crab fisherman head out to the icy pure waters of Alaska and search the largest, most productive commercial fishing grounds in the world for the prized Alaska king, snow and Dungeness crab. As Alaska crab fisheries and harvesting methods gain consumer and media attention, Alaska seafood’s long-term fishery management practices ensure that this unmatched, delicious resource can be enjoyed for generations to come. From sea to table, Alaska crab is always delicious, always sustainable.

The three species of Alaska crab – king, snow, and Dungeness – offer a variety of flavors and textures to please any palette. Alaska king crab, the largest of all the crab, is prized for its delicate flavor, stunning red shell and meat that is white and brilliantly edged in red. Simply steamed with butter, this impressive crab makes a dramatic and delicious meal.  Alaska snow crab, with its sweet, delicate flavor and snowy-white meat is a perfect addition to soups, salads and chowders. Alaska Dungeness is sweet, tender and adored for its flavor and appearance. It is one of the most versatile of Alaska’s crustaceans with meat that is high in protein, but low in calories. Try it with various dipping sauces or in salads, soups, quiches or other versatile recipes.

Fall is prime-time for Alaska crab but consumers know that it can be enjoyed all season long with ASMI’s COOK IT FROZEN!™ techniques. By eliminating the need to thaw, these techniques make Alaska crab a quick and elegant addition to any dinner. Simply rinse crab legs under cold water to remove any icy glaze; pat dry, sauté, grill or steam and enjoy. Frozen crab recipes and recipes for all types of wild and sustainable frozen Alaska seafood can be found online at www.cookitfrozen.com.
Alaska is the pioneer of sustainability. Since acceptance into the Union in 1959, Alaska’s Constitution has mandated that “fish…be utilized, developed and maintained on the sustained yield principle.” This long-term dedication to sustainability has resulted in keeping the world stocked with a continuous, ever-replenishing supply of wild seafood. Indeed, Alaska's effective and precise fisheries management practices are considered a model for the world.
The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute is the State of Alaska’s official seafood marketing arm.  It is a public agency of the State of Alaska, funded by the Alaska seafood industry and federal grants.  ASMI promotes Alaska seafood throughout the U.S. and in 16 other countries.  ASMI also provides education and training to the seafood industry in food safety and quality assurance practices.  Please go to www.alaskaseafood.org for more information.
